Raynart will guide you through creating a one-shot (a short story), roughly equivalent to a manga chapter. He’ll put his manga experience at your service, helping you move your project forward and polish every step: drawing, inking, panel layout, and all the elements that make a story captivating.

One-shots are a key skill to master if you hope to become a recognized manga creator one day, rather than someone whose manga career is only brief (whether in France, Japan, or elsewhere).

This coaching is not intended for beginners, as we’ll focus directly on creating one-shots. You should already have a solid grasp of drawing, at least in the following areas:

  • General drawing skills (anatomy and confident linework)
  • Perspective
  • Dynamic poses
  • Inking
  • Shading

Here’s how the coaching works:

0- Before we begin
First, we’ll define the kind of project you want to work on (a one-shot or a series), its target audience (children, teens, young adults, adults, or another group), the genre, and the goal of the project (a manga contest, self-publishing, etc.).

We’ll also discuss your availability to estimate how long it will take to complete a one-shot together.

I- Developing your story
We’ll work on your project’s story to make sure it will interest your target audience and has all the key elements needed to keep readers engaged. Together, we’ll establish the narrative structure, which will determine the final page count.

II- Creating the Name (storyboard)
You’ll create the Name (storyboard) based on the narrative structure. I’ll help you improve your pages by refining panel placement, choosing the most effective perspectives, and planning the page layouts.

III- Penciling
Once the name is approved, you can start penciling your pages. We’ll check for technical details that need correcting or improving, as well as speech-bubble placement and size, sound effects, and more.

IV- Inking
Finally, you can ink your pages. We’ll do a final review of the inking, including shading, solid black areas (beta), and various effects that add dynamism.

FAQ

Will this coaching guarantee that I win a contest or get a publishing deal?
No. No organization can guarantee that, not even Japanese editors themselves. However, this coaching will give you the best possible chance of achieving your goal.

Will my one-shot be finished by the end of the coaching?
Raynart will help you choose a realistic coaching duration for completing your one-shot. Ideally, you’ll finish on time. Otherwise, we’ll make sure the main work is done and a substantial portion of the pages is finalized, so you can complete the rest on your own.

For someone who can devote enough time to the project, three months of coaching may be enough. If you’re studying or working full-time alongside it, six months is more realistic.

With a year of coaching, Raynart can guide you through several different projects. The more one-shots you create, the more experience you’ll gain and the better your chances of building a professional career.

Can I have my one-shot printed at the end of the coaching?
Yes. You can have your work printed; printing, shipping, and file-preparation costs will apply. The cost will depend on the number of pages, the format you choose, any special cover effects, and the number of copies you want.

Printing can be done in Japan, to the standards of Japanese printers specializing in manga doujinshi. Raynart will provide pricing and recommended retail prices to help you recoup your costs if you decide to sell the copies.
